SAP BTP Roadmap: What’s Coming Next

If you work with SAP, or you’re planning to, you’ve probably noticed that most big announcements lately end up pointing at the same place: SAP Business Technology Platform. Clean core, Joule, AI agents, integration, data. Almost all of it runs through BTP one way or another. That makes the SAP BTP roadmap worth reading properly instead of skimming the headlines.

This post covers what SAP announced at Sapphire in May 2026, what is due in the rest of 2026 and into 2027, and what it means if you are learning SAP or training a team. We run SAP training in Pune at SKILS, so we look at this from a practical angle: which skills will people actually be asked for?

One note on dates before we start. Every “planned” date below comes from SAP’s own Sapphire 2026 Innovation News Guide. Roadmaps move, and Q3 2026 has only just ended, so check SAP’s Road Map Explorer to see what really shipped.

A quick refresher on SAP BTP

SAP BTP is SAP’s cloud platform for building applications, extending S/4HANA, connecting systems, working with data and running AI. It began in 2012 as SAP NetWeaver Cloud and has been renamed more than once since then; the SAP BTP page on Wikipedia has the full history. Today it is usually described in four parts: application development and automation, data and analytics, integration, and AI.

If you have heard people say “keep the core clean and build on the side”, BTP is the “side”.

The big change: BTP now sits inside the SAP Business AI Platform

The biggest news from Sapphire was a new umbrella called the SAP Business AI Platform. It brings SAP BTP, SAP Business Data Cloud and SAP’s AI foundation together, and SAP describes it in three layers: a context layer, a build layer and a governance layer. You can read SAP’s own account in the Sapphire keynote recap.

In plain language, the context layer is the data and process knowledge an agent needs before it can do anything sensible. The build layer is where people create agents and apps. The governance layer is how a company keeps track of what those agents are doing.

Does this replace BTP? No. BTP is one of the three pieces. What changed is the pitch. A few years ago BTP was mostly the place for extensions and integrations. Now SAP positions it as the place where agents are built, connected and controlled.

Joule Studio: where the building happens

For developers, Joule Studio is the part to watch. SAP says it is available through an early adoption program now, with general availability planned for Q3 2026. Here is what the roadmap says about it:

  • Low-code and pro-code. You can build agents visually, or bring your own framework. LangGraph, AutoGen and LlamaIndex are named, and SAP Cloud SDK for Python is part of the toolkit.
  • MCP and A2A support. Agents built in the studio can talk to outside tools and third-party agents using the Model Context Protocol and the Agent2Agent protocol. A new MCP builder is meant to make creating MCP servers easier.
  • n8n inside the studio. A managed n8n environment is planned for Q3 2026, so teams can design AI workflows visually while the data stays on SAP’s infrastructure.
  • Managed runtime. Agents will get a secured, production-ready place to run, with long-term memory backed by SAP HANA Cloud (planned Q3 2026).
  • Frontend choice. A partnership with Vercel is planned for the second half of 2026, so teams can build with frameworks like Next.js where SAPUI5 and Fiori would feel too rigid.

It’s a notable shift. Developers can work in VS Code or other tools they already like, and SAP’s own domain models are supposed to generate code that respects clean core rules.

SAP Integration Suite: more automation, less manual mapping

Integration has always been a big chunk of BTP work, and the roadmap keeps it busy. Planned items include:

  • Curated API exposure for MCP servers (Q2 2026), so you publish only the APIs an agent actually needs.
  • Joule inside Integration Suite, and a migration agent for SAP PI/PO artifacts (both Q3 2026).
  • Agentic orchestration, real-time data ingestion and an AI gateway (all Q4 2026).

The PI/PO migration agent deserves attention if you work in an older landscape. Many companies still have years of interfaces sitting on PI/PO, and moving them is slow work. Anyone who understands both worlds is going to be useful. If that sounds like your direction, our SAP CPI training is where the integration fundamentals live.

Business Data Cloud and HANA Cloud

SAP keeps repeating that agents are only as good as the data under them, and the data side of the roadmap backs that up:

  • SAP HANA Cloud is now a native part of SAP Business Data Cloud.
  • SAP Master Data Governance is available as a core component of the same offering.
  • SAP announced its intent to acquire Reltio to strengthen master data across SAP and non-SAP sources.
  • A zero-copy connection between Business Data Cloud and Amazon Athena is planned for the first half of 2027.
  • Joule agents that create data products and build dashboards are in private preview.

For a fresher, this is a useful hint. Clean, governed data is becoming a job in itself, and it sits close to the finance and supply chain modules people already train in.

ABAP and clean core

If you write ABAP, the roadmap is not asking you to stop. SAP’s ABAP team describes a move from separate AI helpers towards agents that act more like a collaborator across RAP, CDS and unit tests, and it

plans to let developers use third-party IDEs and models alongside SAP’s own tools. The details are in SAP’s post on the 2026 roadmap for Joule for Developers ABAP AI.

The catch is that the ABAP you write is changing shape. Cloud-ready, clean core code is the target. SAP also plans advanced quality gates in RISE with SAP (July 2026) that score a system against the five clean core principles, and it offers a free course called “Clean Core: Applying Clean Core Principles in SAP S/4HANA” on SAP Learning. Our SAP ABAP training in Pune is built around this direction, and system admins should look at SAP Basis training too, since the platform still needs people who keep it running.

Model choice and sovereignty

SAP is not tying everything to one AI model. Mistral is available on the SAP Business AI Platform now, Cohere North was planned for June 2026, and SAP and Anthropic announced plans to bring Claude in as a reasoning model for agents. For regulated industries and Indian companies with data residency worries, SAP also said RISE with SAP on SAP Sovereign Cloud (running on Azure) is generally available in India, among other regions.

What’s coming and when

This is the short version, using the dates from SAP’s May guide:

TimingWhat SAP planned
Q2 2026Curated API exposure for MCP servers in Integration Suite
Q3 2026Joule Studio GA, n8n in Joule Studio, managed agent runtime, Joule and PI/PO migration agent in Integration Suite, SAP Domain Models GA
Q4 2026Joule Work and A2A support GA; agentic orchestration, real-time ingestion and AI gateway in Integration Suite
H2 2026Vercel partnership for Joule Studio
H1 2027Business Data Cloud connection for Amazon Athena

Since we are already in October, treat the Q3 row as “check whether it landed” rather than “coming soon”.

Watch SAP TechEd, 27 to 29 October

The next real checkpoint is SAP TechEd in Berlin from 27 to 29 October 2026, with a virtual option on the same dates. It is the developer event, so expect updates on BTP, Joule Studio, clean core, ABAP and data. If your team cannot travel, the online sessions are worth blocking time for.

What this means if you are learning SAP

Let’s be straight about this. BTP does not replace the modules. Companies still need people who understand finance, procurement, sales and production. What is changing is what’s expected on top of that knowledge.

  • Functional consultants (for example SAP FICO) will increasingly work next to agents that handle things like closing tasks. Knowing the process well enough to judge what an agent did becomes the skill.
  • Developers need clean core habits and some comfort with APIs, events and AI-assisted tooling.
  • Integration people have plenty of work, thanks to cloud moves and PI/PO migrations.
  • Warehouse and logistics specialists should note that SAP plans predictive labour planning in Extended Warehouse Management for Q4 2026. Our SAP EWM course covers the base you need.
  • HR professionals will see a long list of new assistants for payroll, recruiting and onboarding. Our SAP HCM training is a sensible start.
  • Career changers from a non-IT background can look at business analyst training, which is a common way in.

Certification is moving too. SAP says its full certification portfolio, more than 100 exams, now uses hands-on practical assessments, and candidates can use AI tools during the exam. So memorising answers matters less, and practice in a real system matters more. That is how we teach anyway. You can browse every programme on our courses page and see how we support jobs on the career page.

For companies planning their BTP journey

If you are deciding where to invest, a sensible order is: get your custom code under control, sort out master data, then pick one or two agent use cases to test. Tools come after that. If you want your people trained on the same path, we run corporate SAP training that can be shaped around your landscape.

Frequently asked questions

What is the SAP BTP roadmap? It is SAP’s published plan for new features and releases across the Business Technology Platform, covering development tools, integration, data and AI. SAP updates it through its Road Map Explorer and at events like Sapphire and TechEd.

Is SAP BTP being replaced by the SAP Business AI Platform? No. SAP’s announcement describes the Business AI Platform as a combination of BTP, Business Data Cloud and its AI foundation. BTP remains a core part of it.

Do freshers need to learn SAP BTP? You do not need it on day one. Start with one module or skill you can go deep in, then add BTP knowledge as your work needs it. Integration and ABAP are the closest natural steps.

Which SAP courses go well with BTP? Integration (CPI), ABAP and Basis are the closest fits technically. Functional modules like FICO, MM and SD matter because agents act on those business processes.

Where can I check the official roadmap? Use SAP’s Road Map Explorer and the Innovation News Guide for announcements.
